SPECIAL NOTICE
This notice is for one of our own Billy Palladino, Staples H.S. graduate, class of 1968. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in November of 2009 and has been hospitalized since Feb. 6, when complications from throat cancer surgery in November robbed him of his ability to speak. He had an operation where they removed his epiglottis, the flap that covers the trachea during swallowing so that food does not enter the lungs. He had a Tracheotomy and now is unable to speak. He is presently in Danbury Hospital and is receiving Chemotherapy and Radiation and hoping to go home soon.

With all this going on for Bill, another tragedy struck his family. His wife, Janice Ann McClenathan Palladino, age 45, passed away from a massive heart attack on February 11, 2010 at her home in Sandy Hook, CT. She was also a Staples High School Graduate, class of 1983. Not only did his wife meticulously prepare meals that were injected through the feeding tube Bill had implanted after his surgery and monitor his medications, her full-time job at a small manufacturing company in Oxford provided the health insurance that covered the bulk of his medical bills.

Now there is no income for family and they don't know how long the insurance from Janice's job will cover Billy's medical bills. They have 2 daughters, Michelle and Sarah Palladino who are both in college.

We want to let you know that a trust fund has been set up for Billy and his family at:

Newtown Savings Bank
30 Main Street
Danbury CT 06810
Phone: (203) 205-0080

For those of you that want to contact him or send get well cards to, his home contact information is:

Bill Palladino

Here are some links for more information:

Article on Billy in the Danbury News Times, Feb. 21, 2010.

Obituary from the Westport News on Janice Ann McClenathan Palladino.

Please help out where you can. Collectively we can all make a difference for Billy and his family, no matter what the $ amount is. Words of support are also needed if you can't make a donation during these hard times.

Thank you, Shelby Goodlett Pike

Fond memory: Oh how those pipes used to pop in the winter! Whenever I am in an old building with a similar heating system, and I hear that distinctive pop it always brings back fond memories. How sad I was when they closed it down :(

I also remember when Bedford El. was forcibly integrated. It set in motion a long chain of events in my life. All for the better, but what a journey. I still remember a very bad incident in 2nd grade there, right after integration.

I chuckled reading about Mr. Lomnitzer sneezing. It brough back memories of the time we made him so mad that he slammed the yardstick on a table--causing it to break and sending us into fits of giggles! Margaret Sennett Hebert

I lived across from the Daybreak Nursery from 1967-1972, 3rd-part of 7th grade.
Bedford Elementary - I can remember being in Mrs Lyons class and hearing Mr. Lomnitzer SNEEZE the WHOLE school could hear him sneeze. We used to laugh when we heard him.
I remember Mrs. Bell (?) retiring, we made a tile mosaic as you came in the front doors, on the wall to the right of the stairs, of her and the school. At her retirement assembly we had rehearsed and all sang "Leaving On a Jet Plane," but we made up the words of the song to fit her. I loved that school and am so glad I went there.

Ellen Gluckman,
I also played blind man's bluff on the fire escapes (on the right side of the building looking at the rear. We set off fireworks in the concrete tubes in the playground and played dodgeball against the tall green (?) wall near the b'ball court. I remember the following teachers:
1st Grade Mrs. Berger, 2nd Mrs. Betts, 3rd Mrs. Hall, 4th Mr. Forschner, 5th Mr. Mahakian (AKA Ace), and 6th Mr. Lomnitzer. I later served on a United Way board with Mr. Lomnitzer's son (also Charles) who was a great guy. Principal was Mr. Flynn and Gyum coach Mr. Finn (I think).

I lived on Teragram Place, off St. John's Place right by the rear driveway where the busses came in. As a result, although my yard was tiny, I had 3 ball fields at my disposal everyday. I remember playing 500 with neighborhood kids like John Corrigan, Clint (don't call me Henry) Aterbury, John Christy and dozens of others over the years.

The Quigleys and Bazners lived at one end of the playground and the Colbys (Dave and Barrett) at the other end near the school although I don't think they moved to Westport until late in nthe Elementary years.

I remember Mr.Mahakian(sp?)(5th) and Mrs. Tuckman (4th), as well as Mrs. Berger (1st), Ms. Rice (2nd), and Ms. Cavo (2/3rd), and Mrs. Hall(3rd). It was so sad when Bedford El closed. I was in 5th grade and had to be bussed to Hillspiont for 6th. Vicky Wallace

Hi Ellen-
I put a pic of Mrs' Haines up on the web site- you might like to see it- I too thought Mrs Hall and Mrs Haines were outstanding. Mrs Hall worked long enough to teach my kids. BTW we had her for 5th grade not 4th Theile was 4th science I think. Mrs lyons was wonderful in 6th grade too

First grade Ms. Betts; 2nd grade Ms. Berger; Ms Hall 3rd; Ms. Haines for 4th she was incredible as was Ms. Hall.
I loved playing "war" in gym. Those of us who lived nearby played blind man's bluff on the fire escapes.... were we nuts climbing down the outside of the stairs. And we would swing on the flagpole rope

I went to Bedford El just for third grade. Had just moved from Norwalk where we changed classes and now had to go back to spending the day in one room. Mrs. Ponte was my teacher. I got in trouble for talking too much in class to Jackie (a boy) so we were separated. Gym class in that small gym, running laps back and forth. I lived on Clinton Ave that year, next to Ruth Kurman who became my best friend. Then we moved across town and I went to Greens Farms. Andrea Lewis

Bedford El was the quintessential grade school. I loved the narrow side staircases and the playground that to me went on and on forever. I used to walk to and from and remember cutting through yards and climbing over stone walls. I left by the gate at the far end of the playground. I'm sure that play-yard isn't nearly as huge as I remember it, but it seemed forever at the time. Laura, you must have walked to school on main street from where you lived. I know that Jill Christerson and I would usually cut through unless we were riding bikes to school. I remember Mrs. Hall, too...she was SO fashionable as I recall. Patti Murphy

Bedford Elementary is still and I think will always be a great memory of school. I agree the smells, and the well worn hand rails on the stair ways. My brother and I would walk to school, he would go in on the left side and I would continue to the right entrance. My third grade teacher Mrs. Hall would let me bring the books to the attic when we were finished with them. The attic had a great big round top window and that wonderfull attic feeling. It was filled with old desks and chairs, maps and globes. I would linger just a bit and look out the windows feeling that I knew a spot that others did not I still tell people I meet about the beautiful school I attended, with the wonderful paintings. Also how we did not have to share the cafeteria with the auditorium, and gym. How at lunch we sat at tables for four and our Teachers ate with us. How civilized. Bedford El. Forever. I remember Memorial Days. This is a montage of thoughts about Memorial days in Westport during WWII. I do not remember where the parade formed but I do recall riding my bike along with other boys and girls down Main Street, across the Post Road to Jesup Green. Our bikes were festooned with red white and blue crepe paper interweaved in the spokes. The day before the parade either the public works or the American Legeion placed flags in front of all the businesses in town. There was a grand Marshall who rode in an open 4 door touring car--a very, very old man, a Civil War Vet I think, although more likelly a Spanish War vet. A contingent of WWI Vets in uniform including my neighbor Mr. Harry Keene. This was followed by Connecticut Home Guard, the Staples band, the three Selectmen and other local dignataries. There was a a reviewing stand at Jesup Green where after the parade there were speechs and exhortations to buy war bonds. One year there was a big board with the names of all the local men in service. The board listed the names and branch of service in blue. Names of those who died in service were in gold. That board, which grew to at least three panels, was moved and stood in front of the Town Hall on State Street. In those days men wore hats and I remember them uncovering and putting the hats over their hearts as the color guard marched by. The parade was a big deal and the parade route was lined with residents every year. We kids had about another two weeks of school after the 30th but we knew the end was in sight. Donnell Miller

The smells! Have any of you been back to Bedford since it has been converted to town hall space? Well...it still has the lingering smells, the ones that really are memorable are long gone, those of paste, floor wax on the gym level, the scents of plate lunches curling their way up through the hallways, mimeograph fluid. It was such an honor to get the job of mimeographing papers for the teacher. I remember cranking out those sheets of paper with Beth Sennett in a little room in the back of the auditorium. She got the job, I got to help! The rainy days! It was always so cozy on a stormy day, even if we could not go out and play. I especially liked the rain against the windows in Mrs. Weigle's 5th grade class. Gym class! I loved all those games, dodge ball, WAR~ that was a blast!!! I hated with a passion the ropes though, yuch! The playground! 4 square, how cool was it to be the one to carry your class playground ball outside for recess! Hopscotch, marbles (steelies were the best!), tetherball, blisters from the monkey bars, and Jonathan Schiff chasing the girls to catch a kiss behind the shed! The Spring Fair~ Do you remember? I once won a prize for a bride doll I entered in a doll contest. The excitement of the 1st day of school and other special times of the year! All the new lunch boxes, blue notebooks and pencil cases filled with cool supplies we bought at Ben Franklin. Wearing scout uniforms to school and selling girl scout cookies. Trying so hard to win a ribbon on Field Day, alas, I never did! The first day of summer! Wonder why I am not remembering anything about actually learning anything!? Judith Samuelson Christie

I remember the Air Raid Drills, being fingerprinted, playing Red Rover on the north side of the playground. I remember playing marlbes for "keepsies." I remember that Frankie Demace lost an eye when hit by a marble, but I don't remember the circumstances. I remember the teachers, especially Mrs. Sniffen and Miss Lumkin. Miss Lumkin Joined the WAVES. I remember my friends; Evan Jenkins, Sam Flora, Clark Lees, Rozy Milligan, George Lemke, Ted Fable, et al. I remember counting great fleets of B-17s and P-38s probably on their way to Europe. I remember... Donnell Miller
