Hello to many friends from the class of 81' (not mine but Tommy's). This is only the second time I have been on this website. It is so nice to read up and think of all of you. Fondly,

Jack, thanks for posting this. I remember Greg as being a sweet, adorable boy. I remember him mostly from elementary school. In fact, I have my 3rd grade picture from Mrs. Wolfson's class and he was in his Cub Scouts uniform. I'm sorry for his family and those that were close to him. A real tragedy for him to leave this world so soon.

Jack, thanks for posting. I also have fond memories of Greg. I lost touch with him after I left for boarding school, but I remember him as a really good guy who had his own style, and someone who was always fun to hang out with.
Condolences to his friends and family.

I second the thanks to Jack for putting this here. I'm so sad to hear about Greg. I think that he was one of the first people I knew in school in Westport (along with Wendy Klein, Phoebe Sarason and Dana Goldsmith!). I remember in first grade he wore a bow tie in our class picture. I think it was that year that his own father died very young. He was seemed like a kind guy when we got older, although I knew him best in elementary school. I remember chasing him around the playground a lot in first grade. Love to Tim and family if anyone speaks with them. Many thanks for posting this. Very sad.

Thanks for posting the obit here, Jack. Greg had just joined Facebook a few months ago, and I was so thrilled to be in touch with him again. Apparently he died of a heart attack.

Greg Smith passed away recently - while I don't see him listed here as a classmate, he surely was known to many and did attend Staples. Obit follows.
* * * * *
Gregory J. Smith, 46
Gregory John Smith, 46, of Brookfield, Conn., soared to the great beyond Sunday, Feb. 21 in Danbury Hospital.
Greg was born April 22, 1963 in New York City, son of Lillian Smith and the late Harry L. Smith. Greg, who was also known as “Dingo” to his friends, Marched to the beat of his own drum.
He grew up in Westport and attended Staples High School before setting his sights on adventure, and building a life for himself in Norway.
When he came back to Westport after several years abroad, Greg, who had a heart as big as the world when it came to animals, decided to combine his passion and his work.
He studied grooming at the Edwardian School of Grooming, and worked over the years in many grooming shops in Connecticut. One of Greg’s great adventures was a spontaneous road trip he took to Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah.
Survivors in addition to his mother of Westport include one sister, Virginia and one brother Timothy.
Friends are invited to attend a celebration of Greg’s life on Friday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. in the Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road East, with The Rev. Amy Forte officiating.
Interment will follow in Willowbrook Cemetery.
To Greg, Best Friends was like Jerusalem, and it would make him smile to know that you remembered him by making a contribution to Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, Utah, 84741.

Beth, I just read your post and Jack's. I remember you too and I remember your smile and laugh. What I remember was a happy and very funny girl. I'm so sorry to hear that those weren't the happiest of times for you. We were at Coleytown Junior High together and maybe we also saw each other at Temple Israel? My Mom moved away from Westport after I graduated from law school (my dad passed away while I was in college), so unfortunately I don't get back to Westport very much. I have such warm memories of the place, and the innocence of growing up there. It sounds like you are doing great now and live a wonderful life. All the best, Cindy Clarfield (now Hess).

Hi Jack,
Thanks for writing and Happy New Year.
I remember you as well. I think we were lab partners one year at Coleytown one year; we spent the better part of an afternoon each week staring down the neck of a microscope- hoping to discover the hidden merits of dead frog torso.
Those were the days, weren’t they?
Not sure we’ll get back to Westport before the summer or fall, but come into New York some time when my husband and I are there. We’ll have a drink and a good old fashioned tell all.

Hey there Beth - funny how more than a few have posted that they weren't in the happiest of places during their years at Staples, although you, unlike others, have not laid blame on the school, or the town, etc. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I remember you, and your smile and laugh, quite well from our Burr Farms and Coleytown JH days - I am glad to hear that you have found that smile again!
If you are ever back in this town (which I too left after Staples but ended up coming back to, eventually) let some of us townie friends of yours know, and we'll hear that story at one of the usual hometown places. Happy New Year.

Hi, it’s Beth Warshofsky. Surprised to hear from me? The truth is I’m a little surprised myself. Something came up last night which prompted me to drag out my yearbook, and later I discovered this website.
Before I get into my own stuff, I wanted to tell Mona how sorry I was to learn about Alan. That is just awful. I knew him slightly at Coleytown, he was always fun loving and energetic.
I think it is great that you all have stayed in touch and are so much a part of each others’ lives, if only by email. I left Westport for New York after graduation and never looked back. But even when I lived there, I was never really there. My teenage years were particularly painful, and by the time I got to Staples I had pretty much shut down socially; except for a few close friends, I didn’t get to know a lot of you, and those I did know, I pushed away. That I regret.
I thought that leaving Westport and escaping to the big city would help me to sort things out, but later I realized my problems didn’t stem from where I lived. They were en famille. But that as they say, is another story, best told over a couple of hours and a nice bottle of wine.
Now, the happy part. My husband and I were married in 1987. We live in Charlottesville, Virginia, a few minutes from UVA. We moved here from Washington DC six years ago in search of a more laid back lifestyle. What we found was perfect. The town is beautiful and sophisticated, with great restaurants and shops, and the people are amazing. After a 12 year career in business in DC, I’m now a full time oil painter. I also write a bit on the side. We spend a fair amount of time in New York as well. It works out to be a really nice balance.
It’s good to be back in touch. Happy holidays to everyone, and certainly if you are in Central Virginia, please drop me a line!

Hello Class of 81,
It's been one year (this week) since our friend and teacher Al Pia passed away. Some of us former Staples Players are planning a gathering this upcoming weekend to swap stories about Al and honor his memory in a very informal way. We'd love to have you join us.
Pat McCullough started a FaceBook group around this idea earlier this summer but we wanted to be sure everybody who knew and loved Al was aware of our upcoming Labor Day Weekend event and invited.
We'll be gathering this Saturday, Sept. 5th from 5pm to 8pm (raindate Sunday, same times) for a cookout at our place (that's Traci Martin Provost and I) in Southport CT.
We'd love to have you there.
Best wishes go out to all our '81 classmates, and for those of you coming to the 2nd annual unofficial reunion in a few weeks, I'm looking forward to seeing you again soon.

STAPLES PLAYERS REUNION May 24, 2009
Greetings Staples Players alumni and friends of Staples Players!
As you may or may not know, 2009 marks Staples Players' 50th birthday! We are excited to announce a special event we are planning to celebrate this great organization and bring together as many Staples Players alums as possible. We hope you will mark your calendar and save the date of Sunday, May 24th, 2009. This is the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, which we chose so that people would take advantage of the long weekend and come to Westport. The event will take place at Staples and will feature musical numbers, stories, photos and video from past Players productions.
Please email StaplesPlayers50@gmail.com if you are interested in hearing more about this event – how to get tickets, get involved, etc. Please include your graduation year, email address, what shows you were involved with and what role you had in those shows (tech, pit, cast – if so, what roles played).
We will offer more information about this exciting event in coming weeks – for now, we hope that you forward this message on to your high school friends and start to make your travel plans. Please see below for how you can help us.
We are very much looking forward to this exciting event – help us spread the word!
Happy New Year, Staples Players
Things we are interested in hearing from you – please respond if there is anything you can help with:
-Do you have a particularly funny and/or touching anecdote about your time in Players that you would like to share? If so, please email StaplesPlayers50@gmail.com. We are looking for some people to share stories during the celebration.
-Do you have a sibling that was also in Players that might be able to attend the event with you? We are looking to put together a number in the show celebrating siblings involved with Players and would like to include as many people as possible. Please note that this includes actors, pit and tech.
-Do you have photos or videos of past Players productions to share with us? If so, please email KerryLongPhoto@gmail.com. We are not only interested in possibly featuring them in the celebration but copying them (including transferring videos to DVD) to keep in the Staples Players archives.
-Are you currently a performer or involved in the arts?

Vicky Wallace and Deborah Scire, oh my, I remember so well at Bedford Jr High, walking into the bathroom, gotta say its cool.... we even had some teachers who followed the rule. I can not imagine how the world has changed, what we used to do then and how life for my kids is today.
I am glad to hear all these names and have the memories come back. It was great to put some faces to the names of the past at the Duck, Vicky too bad you and Deborah were not there, but thanks to Jeb and Eva, I am hopeful we will do it again, and again, and again.
I had such a great time that night, smiling and laughing until my cheeks were sore from smiling too much!!
Be well everyone!

To All Those 1981 Orphenians who remember our trip to Europe - I am still in touch with one of our host families from Holland and we visited them in Well this summer. Being back was wonderful and brought back a lot of GREAT memories! My boys sat at Vink's bar and Vink himself even came out to say hello to the OLD Orphenian and her kids! Anyway, Vinks just this week celebrated their 100th year in business and I received the following information from my friends about the bar. Thought those who remember drinking there would like to know a little bit about the establishment. "The Vink family has the cafe-restaurant for 100 years in their family, so a reason for a party!
The cafe (before it was a farm) was built in 1782. Until the war (1940) there was a mill next to the cafe. The farmers came with their grain and drank something during their visit to the mill.
And even without the mill, they are still coming... "
I'll dig out some photos from our 1981 trip and attempt to post them. Cheers! Robin Perry Rothman

Hi Everyone this is great!! I am so bummed i ended up missing the reunion...I totally forgot and I was town too!! I am still in Hawaii but will be moving back in early 2010. I love hearing about the "old days" and Kelly Marr put up some great old pictures of us from Bedford El. Oh and Deborah Scire says hi also. She refuses to learn computers so I am sending her message. She lives in Norwalk and has her own fitness company called Fitness Inc. After a very rough year for her(her father passed very quickly, and 6 months later she found she had breast cancer but is fine now) she continues to do very well and for so many reasons she is my hero. That is one tought lady.

My god this is so cool and insane. All these people, all these names. All these memories. Terri Murphy and Judy Lichtman (I saw your mom at my dad's service, Judy). And I'm thinking about the summer before 11th grade at wellesley - but who was there with me - cathy? who else? Anyhow it's great to see your names. I went to private school starting in 11th grade so it's been a long while for some of those names. I'm in Portland, OR since january - living a relatively hippy life (by east coast standards, at any rate). Drop me a line.

I've been reading all these wonderful ideas for connecting our next reunion with some sort of a fund raising effort. So, I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. Since I was apparently the one that stimulated all of the noise on this blog and the first mini-reunion (a big thanx to Jeb for doing so much to organize it) with my question about classmates with MS ... I thought it might make sense to do some fund raising for MS. The MS Society holds MS Walks and Rides throughout the US, mostly in the spring and summer. Perhaps we could do a few different walks or rides with regionally based alumni groups. We could walk for the 5 classmates with MS, as well as the other Staples alumni and their families affected by MS (I know of at least 6 others).

Nice of you to step up, Doug. I still remember how much fun I had sitting in the back of 10th grade geometry with you and Doug Weiss and Dan Rothenberg. My sister, Julia Cremona DeMeo (who is friends with your sister), raises a lot of money for Jr. Achievement by running a charity golf tournament at the Greenwich Country Club with cocktails, dinner and a silent auction. I think something like that would be a fun way for our class to raise some money for charity. She also runs bowl-a-thons for and tennis tournaments to raise money. Patti Kondub from our class raises money for breast cancer every year by running a spin oddessy at a Gym in Norwalk. There are so many ways to raise money...but I think you would have to set up some sort of Board of Directors or at least one person to be in charge of distributing the money once it's raised (wouldn't there have to be some sort of written policy stating who was eligible for the money & how it was going to be distributed)....I think that would be the tricky part....or maybe before every fundraiser you could clearly state that any funds raised would be for specific individuals/families. I just think it would be awful if there was any confusion about where the money was going.

Dear Friends,
Hello! It sounds like you all had a wonderful time and it's so good to see people re-connecting. It would have been really nice to join you.
Jeb: I really appreciate your bringing up the idea of a fundraiser for the families of our classmates who have passed away and/or to support a cause in their honor. A number of Alan Strick's friends have been talking about ways in which we could honor his beautiful life. (This Spring will be the 5th anniversary of his passing.)
I would be happy to give this all some more thought as would many of Alan's buddies. I would also do the legwork related to establishing a stand alone entity if this effort goes in that direction. (I'm sure we could learn a lot from the Susan Lloyd Fund.)
For now, I did want to make you aware of the Alan Strick Memorial Educational Fund that supports the college education for Mona and Alan's four children. Donations can be made out to:
Riemer & Braunstein LLP, as Attorneys for the Alan Strick Memorial Educational Fund
Send to:

The challenge with July 4 or Labor Day is that traveling is more expensive and more of a hassle because it is peak time. I think the summer is a good idea, but not around a holiday.

I like the idea of an annual event and it would be great if we could raise some money for a good cause. The simplest way to raise money would be to see if there is a road race or something going on and just all sign up to do it. Bigelow Tea has a community fun run/walk every fall and all the money is donated to area charities. Maybe there is also an area MS walk that we could all sign up for. I just think it might be easier to all agree to sign up for something like this than try and organize a whole new fundraiser. But if someone is up for organizing and creating a new fund raiser - go for it!

Hi to everyone who atteded the Staples class of 81 mini reunion back on Sept 27th & 28th. Please don't be mad if I did not respond to your email/message. I was waiting for them to stop coming in so I could respond just once, as I was getting 15 to 20 a day and could not keep up with them. So, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to everyone who attended and I appreciate the "Thank You" emails from everyone... I had an absolute ball and it was nice to see everyone. I was talking to a few people during weekend, and even after, about how special our class was and still is. Didn't matter who you were, who you hung out with, if you played sports, hung out behind the 9 building
(He He He), were in drama, etc., we all got along great for the most part. And you could see that at the Duck on the 27th and at Compo the next day. Now, there was talk of making this an annual event up until the 30th in 2011 at the very least. There was also talk about making this a fund raising event to support Staples High School and/or support the families of our class mates who have passed... I was asked to throw those ideas out there. Anyway, if an annual event, the dates for next year are Saturday Sept 26th & Sunday Sept 27th. I think 51 weeks is enough notice, no???? He He He.
Again, Thank you to everyone for coming to the event and for all the emails..
Peace Out

Hey John. Thanks for the info regarding face book. I did go on the site briefly but only saw one person under Staples that I knew. I didn't look for our class. I'll have to do more research, I guess. :) I heard back from Andre & he's also here in Fl. I don't know how she's doing. I haven't been able to locate her yet but I haven't given up. I heard from Areatha Bright thanks to this site, she was a grade younger. I have come across our yearbook, over the years. So now I need to find it again so I can put some pics on there. So, get me up to date with you & yours...you can just email me if you'd like.

Well, I guess I need to get on here more often. :) Yes, I remember all of that & the people. Does anyone know where Gail Belmuth & Sue Beres are? I have always wondered about them too. Unfortunately, I don't know about Neil or Tara...we didn't stay in touch. Andrea Savio was actually here in this area when I moved here, to Clearwater, Fl. Remember her? What about Alicia Smolen, Cathy, Missy, Colin R, Chris W...it's funny what one remembers. I have one daughter in her last year at college & I've had the pleasure of raising one of my goddaugters since she was 2 mos. & she'll be 11 next month. I've always thought of you all & wanted us to have some type of reunion. I'm going to see if I still have Mrs. Chip's email address & invite her to this site. Last we "emailed" she was about to move to FL but that's been some time ago. I also posted on Coleytown's section. This is great!

Oh my gosh, you guys, glad to see the Coleytown folks finally joining in! Ginny, Giselle, Sharon, we were all at Burr Farrms together. Wow. And I remember Lucy Roessler, too. I'm in Boulder, CO with 4 kids, and will have been married for 20 years next week! I hardly ever go back to CT. I will go, definitely, though, for our 30th.

Dorita! I always wondered where you went! Wasn't Gospel Choir fun? That was one of my favorite singing groups. Debi, it's good to see you on the board - I remember going to your dad's house across from Bedford Jr. High.
I saw Lucy Roessler about two years ago. She's married with 4 kids and lives in Ridgefield.
It was great to see everyone at the Duck on Saturday. Jeb and Eva - thanks so much for organizing it! I talked so much that I lost my voice the next day - good times.

Giselle, how are you, where are you and great memory. I loved reading all of the Bedford memories but kept thinking what about Coleytown. My youngest is already in 8th grade so we are always talking about what it was like. Talk about reliving things. : )
I hope you are well, Debi

Dorita!!!I still remember Gospel group in the section of the auditorium with the folding doors. I also remember swimming and parties at Lucy's house. What was her last name? And the spanish teacher everyone had a crush on? How do you like Florida?
