Wow--what a great weekend! Thanks so much to everyone on the committee: Dan, Rob, Rob, Sue, Jean, Lee (Kathy), Lia, Linda, Eric, Eileen, Anne and Peggy (sorry to anyone I forgot). You guys did a phenomenal job! It was so great to see everyone and reconnect. Staples is incredible: WiFi everywhere, 72 flatscreen TVs for announcements, a greenhouse, everyone takes swimming, a TV studio that produces a high quality news program 3 mornings a week, BUT no open campus and a full time security guard, no black top smoking section or fresh air between classes. As Dan Woog said on the tour, "Lunch at the DQ is no longer an option."
Leora Tec
PS: Loved those nametags-great touch.
PPS: Missed many of you who were not there (and probably some of you who were!). Come next time!

Hi all. Looking forward to the reunion. I have been tucked away in oblivion in West Hartford, smack in the middle of the state, for the past 22 years, not keeping up with anyone from home. I miss Westport, but have been living a decent life here in Central Connecticut. I don't think I have changed much but I am sure with my crappy memory I might not remember a lot of people from school. I still have my Raise your Stein to 79 T-shirt. My kids think it is really funny that there is a beer mug on the shirt. Oh the good ol days.
Ok, I will see everyone Sat. night. I am still short so that will never change.

Hi Everyone! Hope to see you at our Reunion... Just a quick post to let you know that my house at 21 Evergreen Avenue will be available for rental in mid May. Many of you remember this home from our childhood. It is part of the new Evergreen Avenue Historic District with access to Winslow Park. BRAND new heating system and updates makes this a charming rental for someone who wants to walk to town and experience a part of Westport history. Please contact me for more information. Cheers, Dana

I had no idea that this site existed. In realizing that it's our 30 year reunion this year I've become very nostalgic to say the least. My older daughter is graduating from HS this June and it's brought back a flood of memories ~ funny how the mind works. Humans are complex :)
Does anyone know if there's a decent response to the reunion to far?
Also, I've lost touch with KO the last several years! Does anyone know if she's still around?

As soon as I saw the author's name in the adds for Defiance, I knew it was your mother. She was very good friends with my grandmother as you may recall. I have been a browser on this site for a while...it really brings back a lot of memories.
There's a lot of catching up to do. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again at the reunion.

Andy,
The film is based on my mom's book Defiance, which came out in 1993 and which Ed Zwick (the director) optioned to make the film. The Duffy book came out after hers. Since she speaks Polish, Hebrew and Yiddish (not to mention German and English) my mom is able to interview her subjects in whatever language they feel comfortable. I agree the story is very compelling.

PS - My uncle Al Fortunato, Susan's husband, tried to write a book about our family's history during war time, but the fact that my great-grandfather led a spectacular escape from Germany, holding their captors prisoner in the forests of northern Italy. However, actual history proved more ironic than best-seller material, as the troop of infantrymen led by my great-grandfather remained hidden and lost in their own country, more than a year after the war had ended.

Yes Leora, my aunt, Susan Rabiner, was your mom's editor at Oxford. Dry Tears came out in 1984.
Perhaps it was the double connection, that I knew you from Players, and my aunt serving as editor, but as that book made the rounds through my family, we were comparing and contrasting to Anne Frank's Diary and even Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search For Meaning."

I too am looking forward to the film. A few years ago I bought and read "The Bielski Brothers," by Peter Duffy. Last August I visited Yad Veshem in Jerusalem and saw more materials about the Bielski partisans and other partisan groups. I always thought their story would make a great movie. The Daniel Craig character wound up living a fairly anonymous life in Midwood, Brooklyn, where my mother grew up. Kudos to your mother and brother for bringing this story to the screen

Richard:
In answer to your question: My mom first wrote her own memoir about passing as a Christian during the Holocaust. That was actually while we were in high school. It is called Dry Tears. I think Rob Fortunato's aunt was her editor at Oxford University Press. Right, Rob? Then she started focusing on rescue and resistance (she is a sociologist by training); first rescue by Christians and then rescue by Jews. Defiance is about these three brothers who saved between 1200 and 1600 Jews in the forests of Belarus. They saved women, children, old people...No one was turned away. In fact they went looking for people to save. It is an amazing story.

Leora,
I can not wait to see the film!
My grandmother fled Belgium just before the invasion with my mother (just 4 years old) and my uncle (3 years old).
We made a video of my grandmother telling her full account of the events before she past away.
My mother died this past February, she was just 71 years old.
This is a story that must be told over and over again, especially now.
Your family must be very proud!

Hey, Any of you who live in Westport, could you save today's Westport News for me? There is an article about my mom and the book she wrote called "Defiance." It was made into a film starring Daniel Craig that is about to come out. My brother was co-producer. It is the true story of the largest rescue of Jews by Jews during WW II.
Anyone who can save the article for me please let me know.
Thanks, Leora

Andy! Hello! It was fun running into you at the 120 Broadway Starbucks most afternoons but unfortunately my company and many other wonderful aspects of my life ended 9/11/01. I wish I could say it was my man who ended our visits but it was 9/11/01. So you know I reside in the burbs of Atlanta, not Florida. Anyone who's ever in my neck of the woods give me a shout. This is a great place to live with all the outdoor venues for live music, so many places to hike and great cost of living. I love showing off the sights! A 650K house here are 2M up north, unreal.
Happy, healthy and prosperous new year to all.

Many thanks to Craig Floch for his eloquent and moving memorial to Bill Ford. It is a reminder to me of how some of us have greater struggles than others, from birth. We are not all born equal, but it is clear that those born with less must strive harder and those whose gifts are greater must learn humility and compassion. I did not know Bill Ford, but am moved to hear that so much affection is bestowed upon his memory and his family. I send my sympathy and prayers to his loved ones during this painful and difficult time.

I haven’t posted in a while, but have been following the action in cyberspace. Amazing how 30 or more years can melt away with a few memories. Hard to believe, but our next president, a college classmate, is younger than most of us. Dan, thanks again for all your efforts bringing the class of ‘79 together. Craig, beautiful thoughts re Bill Ford. Call me and one of these days we’ll get together. My thoughts also go out to the Ford family, and to Helen and anyone else who lost any loved ones this last year. So Caryn, Florida and a boy. Now I know why I haven’t seen you in the coffee place at 120 Broadway in about 6 years. Dave Stalling, what are you up to in D.C. Back in May when everyone was posting like crazy I wrote about an early multi-town crime spree when you, Paul Bushong and I were busted for illegal fishing by the fake reservoir police in Easton and then road our bikes to Weston and promptly got busted by the Weston police at Devil’s Den for illegal swimming. Put me on the road to environmental law enforcement. Paula Gallo, nice chatting at the get-together in August. I did make it to the Sinai to dive in August. A great and interesting time, diving with a shop in Dahab run by Egyptian guys in Yankee caps. Never had to step over camel crap to reach a coral reef before. Given today’s events I don’t think I’ll be visiting the Sinai again any time soon. Dana Thrush, I didn’t know your mother, but it sounds like she was a truly wise woman.
Who out there in 79'er land wants to come over for a party on the Upper West Side of Manhattan as part of the build up to the big reunion, sometime between now and then? Let me know. Kids included, as they always are around here. In a flashback moment I was driving to the Stew Leonard’s in Yonkers today with my 11 year old son when China Grove by the Doobies came on the radio. He loved it and said he had to download it from Itunes to his Ipod. I played it for him on an actual record when we got home. Some things change and some things transcend the ages. Looking forward to seeing lots of you in 2009.

How devistating about Bill Ford. I have been to Trader Joes countless times but don't remember seeing Bill...perhaps I did not recognize him ? Just a lesson to pay more attention! I hope someone might have a recent photo of Bill to post. I hope that his sister Maureen and the rest of his family know and feel that Bill is at peace in a beautiful heavenly place and this helps to ease their pain.

Happy Hanukkah and Happy New Year to your family.
G-d bless Bill and his family.

It has been a long time since I commented about a reunion and I am glad to see so many interested in getting together. As we grow older and more mature we should forget about the differences we all had in the past and the prejudices against each other. Bill Ford's death is a reminder that life is short and no matter who we are or what we stand for, we all add something to this society. Bill was a kind and simple person who never hurt a soul. I have been fortunate to overcome my disabilities as I recall being in special ed reading classes with Bill in Coleytown. I was able to excel and he was not. This did not make him any better or worse than me and we both serve a purpose to society. For all you whom have had a loved one pass in recent years, I wish you peace, love and a happy New Year.May Bill Ford rest in peace and his sister Maureen and Family find comfort and recognize what a special person he was.

I hope everyone had a great Holiday. I have been reluctant to post here since I didn't attend either elementary or middle school in Westport so my "memories" don't start until 10th grade at Staples (and were killed off at the Nike site shortly thereafter during D1 and D2 periods). I had taken my family out to dinner on Wed. night in Fairfield and coming home, we passed the accident about a half hour after it happened - we live a quarter mile away from that intersection. It's extremely sad. My son, who is 6, was very shaken by the clothes in the road. Please, everyone have a safe and happy New Year.

Hi Brett,
I don't suppose you make house calls to KY? Returned home last night to see 3 foot (diameter) 60 foot+ tree over in our back yard. Went away from the house, but what a mess! Linnie and Daniel had their tire swing in it, so you can guess how they felt last night.
When you get a chance swing by 21 Evergreen. Alas, the Maple out front is near the end of its lifespan. I'll be in touch to discuss. New boiler has to go in next week.
Best wishes for a joyous holiday,

It looks like I am about 29 years late in adding a post. So many names look familiar. I graduated in 1979 and never returned. I was dating Smitty (Doug Smith '78) when I left and was so sad to hear of his death. Dana, Joanne, etc., remember you all "dating" Smitty with me. I don't remember us spending much time alone until he went to Lehigh. I am in Chicago now and would love to come to a reunion. I have a scrapbook the girls made me for my birthday. I need to get it out and trigger some memories.
