Lou Santella was my "adopted father" starting the day I lost my own dad during Junior year at Staples. He and Marge were my CCD group leaders, and from that time forward, they have continued to this day to make me feel a part of their family. (And having Mark as my "older brother" has been WAY COOL!) I'm still in touch with Marge regularly, and I'm sure I'll continue to be.
What an indescribably huge impact they both had on my life! You know how much I'll miss him, Mark, but I'll always keep him with me. No one will ever replace him (I would say they "broke the mold," but you seem to be shaping up well enough to keep your dad's presence alive! I know he would approve.)
I've asked your mom to keep me posted on any memorial plans in Westport. Wouldn't miss the chance to see Lou off to the next stage of his life (and I know he'll have plenty of jokes -- and tough questions -- ready for me if and when I'm lucky enough to join him again!)
Keeping all of the Santellas in my heart!

Mark Santella's dad ran a barbershop in Saugatuck. He was one of the friendliest, open hearted "dads" around. I remember my mom bringing me there for a haircut and me feeling "big" that she left me there alone while she went out to do some errands. I recall Mr Santella made me feel "big," too - talking to us like real people, not little kids. Maybe it's because he had such a love of life (like a kid) in his own heart. Mark is a great testament to his old man. Carry on the tradition, Mark!

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Lou Santella, father of our classmate Mark on Monday 2/22/2010 in Florida. Please accept our sincere condolences Mark, as your father was a great man, a legend in Westport and "The Mayor of Saugatuck." Your family is in our thoughts and prayers and your Dad will be truly missed.

Hi everyone! Some great news - the Spinning Wheel has decided to dedicate the entire Inn to the Class of 1974, opening its doors the evening of Saturday, October 10th to JUST our class and guests due to overwhelming demand.
That means more room to party and more space for more folks- so purchase your tickets at -link- to attend the event.
We do have a lot in store that evening, as well as a very exciting afternoon of golf and Ultimate Frisbee - don't miss this, there will be many spectators, news coverage and some very special guests and surprises.
Come celebrate afterwards with us at the dinner dance at The Spinning Wheel and step back into the wonderful Westport we remember.
It will be a blast from the past, but we're wiser and better looking than back then!
So, I invite all of you who haven't joined the booming number of classmates who have said "yes" to the date, to have the weekend of a lifetime with us.
Until we meet again on Friday , October 9th for cocktails at the Southport Brewery to kick off the bash!
Cheers!

A quick correction regarding the attire for the 1974 Reunion Saturday night dinner dance:
As one of our classmates pointed out, some people may not want to wear cocktail attire, so basically, wear what makes you happy and comfortable! The point is to have a great time - and dance, dance, dance. That says it all.
See you in 11 days!

Hi Folks! Stacey here again. Just recieved a few emails asking about the dress for Saturday night, so I thought this would be a great place to respond to those who are in a quandry about "what to wear?"
To all you WONDERFUL people who have said "yes" AND purchased your tickets (!) - Saturday night is cocktail attire - meaning many women will wear a cocktail dress, and the guys can wear a sports coat. Some folks will wear suits, and many will just wear a dress shirt and nice slacks - the trick is to wear what you'll be comfortable in so you can party and dance till you drop - keep that in mind. The remainder of the weekend is very casual. I hope this helps some.
Now, (I can't resist) since I am on here to answer questions, how about this - remember the line "if you build it whey will come," well this weekend bash IS NOT THAT. YOU said you'd come, so we "built it." Now I need you guys to remember that we have 13 days left, and I have just until Thursday to give the headcount. Then the Financial Demons will descend upon me and force us (under duress but I must obey) to raise the ticket price to 135.00 so do yourselves a favor (and me) and get over to your checkbook or to -link- and puchase those tickets!
To all of my friends who sent me personal emails months ago saying you'd attend - I don't see your names! Come on guys, I was so happy to hear from you and to know you'd be at the bash - you will miss a wonderful time, and I will miss your face! Email and Facebook can't compete with the real thing - facetime(!) with those we haven't seen in so many years, and want to catch up with.
I will name a few names - especially one who spurred me on to do this weekend - MELINDA - why aren't you coming? And Tom S. - where are you? We spoke via email, you said you'd be there, what's up with that?
Do any of you have a "bucket list"? Well this reunion should be on that list, so get over to -link- and cross that item off your bucket list - that leaves more fun stuff to do after the reunion, and don't you just love crossing out "things to do" on your post it? Purchasing tickets could be one more task you don't have to worry about.
So, just do it, friends - and I'll see you there - big smile and giant hug waiting.
Cheers!

Hello Staples!
Just last month I had a great time at my husband’s 40th reunion - out of a class of 250 – 30% were there for the weekend, the farthest ones traveling from Thailand and Mexico!
We have to do better than that!
As for Duncan and his rallying call to Assumption School – I hereby challenge all alums of Greens Farms School to be at the Spinning Wheel Inn for a retake of our 6th grade class picture!
Can’t wait to see everyone and make new friends from old times!

Hi everyone. Stacey, let me pile on the praise and gratitude as well! Ron is right, you have a great talent for marketing (some would say that this is an insult, but I mean it as high praise!).
Well, my potential guilt of missing this finally trumped my procrastination and I will be at the Spinning Wheel. It is 5 minutes from where I live. Even better. It will by great to see everyone.

Hi Stacy, I'm not sure what you do professionally, but you belong in a serious marketing role. This post from you is very well written, just enough conjuring up of great images past and future, just enough excitement and desperation to plead with anyone still sitting on the fence. C'mon classmates: log in, sign up, and boogie back down to Westport. See you there!

Hi Folks, 'tis the "mouth" again - this time with a personal invitation and request for your help to make the upcoming reunion the absolute best:
We need each other- I need to give a head count by 9/30 to the Spinning Wheel to ensure that the gala dinner dance is everything you've hoped for and all we've promised and more. So, to those of you who responded to my blog last April (!)and said you would be there-if you've purchased tickets, thank you! If you have RSVP'd and not purchased tickets, please do so at this time. And, for those of you who like to procrastinate and "see who else is coming" - it's time to take the plunge! Go to -link-.
YOU are the reason this 3 day bash is taking place and we have so much in store, plus a number of fantastic surprises, you won't want to miss this, everyone will be talking about our reunion for many years to come. I quarantee this won't be the "sit down at a table for 10 and never get up" affair.
Imagine walking into an historic New England Inn welcomed by a blazing fire, candles and friendly, familiar faces inviting you to take a step into our high school past. Surround yourself with memorabilia, old friends, new ones, and delicious food stations with enticing food and plentiful drinks for 5 glorious hours. Eat, perch, drink and dance- visit and chat with someone you see from across the room. Eat and drink and dance some more, stop to sit at one of the bistro tables with old buddies and new found ones, wander over to view a fantastic montage of memories and music to bring you back to our high school daze.
Dance like crazy, reminisce and when the clock strikes midnight, you won't want to stop!
So, speed those fingers over to the web site at -link- and sign up now- I'd hate for you to miss out on a very special weekend.
See you soon!

Greetings class of '74 from Villa D'Este! Even from afar the Reunion is on my mind Hopefully all of you have received an email invitation regarding all the reasons to attend the weekend, and also a postcard via snail mail. I want to personally ask all of you who were on the 'fence' to jump over and join us - really it won't be the same without all of you. And it does promise to be a wonderful, fun and exhuberant reunion, we've worked hard to ensure that there is something for everyone. Still if you are in doubt, have questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me or anyone on the reunion committee. Ciao!

Well, I don't think I will make it to the reunion from Buenos Aires but I did work at the Black Duck when it was Davy Jones' Locker. I remember one of the other cooks telling me I couldn't possibly be a cook since I neither smoked cigarettes nor drank coffee. I quit to go work at Porky Manero's.
Of course since I never got close to graduating I'd probably feel funny going to the reunion

Hello again, tis the "mouth" from our reunion. There's a link for our registration site and all the details are listed, as well as links to hotels and the like at -link-. We are very stoked now that things are in place.
Friday night is at the Southport Brewery, we've got a Saturday tour of the new Staples with Tom Owen,an Ultimate Frisbee game on the new turf field at Staples at 4 PM and then a dinner/dance with great music at the Spinning Wheel - great flow and great food. Add great people and how can you go wrong?
We hope the weather cooperates for Compo Brunch on Sunday - now all we need is for you all to step up and register! And, of course, spread the word! See you in 3 months and 29 days!

CLASS OF 1974 REUNION NEWS: Hello at last folks! I know everyone has been awaiting our final reunion information and here it is at last! First off, we are so psyched about this event, there are now 12 of us planning, each with different talents, so how can we go wrong? You all should be receiving a "save the date" and if you don't , please let one of us know - me, Ed Cowden, Tom Croarkin. Next, we have a terrific reunion website: -link- which is interactive and will allow you to see who's coming, register and have some fun viewing pictures, adding memories and yes, even a trivia game. Should anyone have memories or pictures, you can upload them as well. The more visits to the site, the more fun it becomes for all. Again visit -link- !
The weekend is slated for October 9, 10,11 2009. It's the 3 day weekend, fall foliage should be at its peak, so Westport will be all "dressed up" for us to enjoy. We start the weekend off with an informal cocktail party Friday night, perhaps with a surprise guest(s), then Saturday begins with a tour of Staples given by our own Tom Owen. Then, at Staples, there's an Ultimate Frisbee competition featuring our original team (yes they are flying in from everywhere - how cool is that?!). After that, we have our Saturday night dinner and dancing bash - but as a treat, it is not "sit down" so there will be lots of mingling and "fork food" and beverages in abundance - there will be places to perch and bistro tables to sit at, but the idea is to eat, dance and mingle - we have a great team of professionals (our own talented class) to keep you laughing with a video presentation, lots of vintage decorations and great music for dancing and reminiscing - in fact, on our web site, you may add your favorite songs to be played interactivly so everyone has a part in making this reunion the very best ever!
After Saturday, which is slated to go from 7 PM - 12 PM and after... Sunday, be ready for a beach brunch, weather permitting, and for those staying until Monday, Sunday night is an Ad Hoc gathering at a restaurant/bar in Westport, by the beach. So everyone, please get those fingers moving to our web site, register and start the reunion now. We need to know how many of you are coming, there is no limit (our venue provides us with plenty of room), so bring your spouses, grab your friends and party on.
One last favor to ask of you all - if you know people who are not on Westporters.com, please reach out to them and get them registered - or if you know people who may not be listed in our directory, take a look at who's been tough to ferret out, and help us get everyone of '74 involved - I think there'll be a surprise for the classmate who gets the most people to register - we need everyone of you to make this the success it will be! Please don't hesitate to get in touch, many of you have and it's been wonderful - so Class of 1974, let's PARTY and make this the "Reunion no one will ever forget."..for all the right reasons of course! See you on -link- soon, I hope, then just a few more months until the weekend we've all been gearing up for!
Cheers! Can't wait to see all of you!

Hi Kathy! Montana! Where? My son was out there for 2 years and I've been out to Whitefish and Kalispell about 17 times - I love it. We're doing the reunion in Westport, not NY.
We had a good meeting at the Black Duck and then Viva's last night. There were 8 of us including Tim Gilcrist, Ax White, Ed Cowden, Karen Kingsley, Carol Mohn, Tom Croarkin and Mike Krysiuk. Lot's of interest and we've got people coming in from Arizona, the Carolinas, Colorado, Singapore(!) - should be a blast. I know Montana is a 2 flight trip, but you've got to come!
Planning a Friday night cocktails and music, Saturday Ultimate Frisbee game and tour of Staples, Saturday night dinner & dancing blast and Sunday brunch and evening cocktails and whatever at Splash. Join us, there are more folks planning this with us from afar - you can help by getting in touch with your group of friends you've kept up with - and of course by you coming as well. Would be great to catch up with you Kathy. Get in touch with me!

Ron, of course spouses are welcome, especially Aussies - they know how to party! :) Would you like to be in charge (maybe with Dan) of a frisbee game or two - maybe at Staples (have to check this out) on Saturday during the day. We have a meeting at the Black Duck this Thursday at 8 PM, check in with one of us, the number is growing - thank G-D - after Thursday. I think it would be fantastic to get the Frisbee Team together, I remember you, Dan et al in the quad, throwing the disc around, then into the field - fun! My son played for a while, I told him about you and Dan, he didn't believe me..Let's keep in touch, thanks for contacting me the other day, it's an inspiration to anyone who's complaining about distance - you've got the prize, thanks Ron!

Ron Kaufman checking in. I have been living in Singapore for 20 years...with lots and lots of travel (see -link- )
If you put this reunion together, I will be there to celebrate our collective 35 year achievements. (And thanks for all your planning work in advance.)
BTW, OK to bring along spouses? Mine's Australian and has heard plenty about Staples from Tom Croarkin, Jon Flom, Dan Buckley. I know she'd enjoy meeting more of you.
Cheers, Ron

I think to myself "I know that person, but what did they look like?" I guess its an age thing. Oct. sounds great! Laddie and I will be there. Laddie is still teaching and coaching at Staples- 41 years of coaching. He's been state champs indoors for 9 straight years, until this year when they finsihed second. I'm still involved with track and field and would look forward to seeing anyone from Cross Country, Indoor or Outdoor Track. Title Nine went thru our senior year allowing girls to compete on boys teams that didn't already have a girls program. That's how Laddie and I met. Hope to see a lot of you at the reunion!
