Hey Melinda and class of 1973 - 'tis the "mouth" of the 1974 reunion asking you to visit the post on the 1974 page and then go to our reunion web site at -link- to register and purchase tickets for the October 9 - 11 3 day bash. I've described our plans in detail and hope that you will all come on board and help make the weekend even better by attending - or even participating in the Ultimate Frisbee match with our original teammates and Al Jolley coming out to coach. You guys were so much a part of our time at Staples, it wouldn't be the same without you - so please take a peak at what I've blogged and then hop on over to -link- to get the full scoop, play some trivia games, see some posts and memories and an amazing array of pictures and hysterical "gems" we've found to jazz things up. Our deadline is approaching on 9/30 - so don't miss out, come out and play! See you soon!

I was too unstable to be the captain of the wrestling team. But I do remember chasing you around the gym. I was the only good looking guy on the wrestling team, along with being the best wrestler so that is why you felt I was the captain. lol

Kevin, were you Captain of the wrestling team 1973? I think I remember you. I was always in the gym working out at the same time you were rollong out the mats or you were throwing us off your wrestling mats...

Hello All. Miracles of modern medicine: I've been home from hospital for a week having donated my kidney to my husband. What a roller coaster! But it will change our lives! Sorry to have missed the reunion but I couldn't risk travel during the tests and subsequent surgery on the 15th Jan. Great memories of Coleytown and Staples and now expect to be able to participate in the next reunion! Bye from London. Debbie Wilson Hoult

Condolences to Ellen Gluckman on the death of her father, Ted. I just read about his passing in the Westport News and recalled (as I'm sure many of you do) what a great dentist and nice guy he was.

STAPLES PLAYERS REUNION May 24, 2009
Greetings Staples Players alumni and friends of Staples Players!
As you may or may not know, 2009 marks Staples Players' 50th birthday! We are excited to announce a special event we are planning to celebrate this great organization and bring together as many Staples Players alums as possible. We hope you will mark your calendar and save the date of Sunday, May 24th, 2009. This is the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, which we chose so that people would take advantage of the long weekend and come to Westport. The event will take place at Staples and will feature musical numbers, stories, photos and video from past Players productions.
Please email StaplesPlayers50@gmail.com if you are interested in hearing more about this event – how to get tickets, get involved, etc. Please include your graduation year, email address, what shows you were involved with and what role you had in those shows (tech, pit, cast – if so, what roles played).
We will offer more information about this exciting event in coming weeks – for now, we hope that you forward this message on to your high school friends and start to make your travel plans. Please see below for how you can help us.
We are very much looking forward to this exciting event – help us spread the word!
Happy New Year, Staples Players
Things we are interested in hearing from you – please respond if there is anything you can help with:
-Do you have a particularly funny and/or touching anecdote about your time in Players that you would like to share? If so, please email StaplesPlayers50@gmail.com. We are looking for some people to share stories during the celebration.
-Do you have a sibling that was also in Players that might be able to attend the event with you? We are looking to put together a number in the show celebrating siblings involved with Players and would like to include as many people as possible. Please note that this includes actors, pit and tech.
-Do you have photos or videos of past Players productions to share with us? If so, please email KerryLongPhoto@gmail.com. We are not only interested in possibly featuring them in the celebration but copying them (including transferring videos to DVD) to keep in the Staples Players archives.
-Are you currently a performer or involved in the arts?

I am guessing that there was some confusion because of the death of Janet Haehl, class of 1972, who died in the fire at Gulliver's in the summer of 1974.

I was on the reunion committee and we were told that Janet Hale had passed away. I compiled a book about all of our classmates who had passed and tried to find at the very least...a record of their death or obituary. I could not find anything about Janet. I did find a Janet Hale, our age who died in Chicago...but I was not sure it was her. I could not find a death record for Steve Smollin either...but many more people confirmed that he had, indeed, passed away. Compiling the book was a sad task, but classmates were pleased to be able to find out where they lived, went to school and about their spouses and children.
If anyone has anymore information it would be extremely helpful...I would hate to think we listed someone in error. Thank you,
Susan

Hope everyone returned home safely with fond memories..or at least a memory of the reunion weekend!!
Happy Thanksgiving
Sincerely,
Daryl

I think that keeping the site up is a wonderful idea! If it's of any help, I have both webhosting and e-mail through Network Solutions, via my website. I believe that I have a huge amount of hosting space available thereupon if anybody has the technical savvy to piggyback it on there. I am a complete Luddite when it comes to computers and require adult supervision just to turn mine on and off. Chip, is this doable?

The reunion committee met for dinner on Monday night (11/3/2008) at Mario's. We had a great time reminiscing about the reunion. Even though immediately after the reunion, some of us said ..."phew! I'm ready to pass the next one off to some other classmates", the consensus was that we do need to get back on the decade track. So after a well-deserved break for a couple of years, we will have to hold another one for our 40th. Peter Ewen and Mark Winslet have already volunteered to help out...I am going to hold you guys to it!
So keep in touch everyone...keep looking for the classmates we missed and keep Eric Bosch apprised of your contact info...should it change.
We were discussing whether to keep the staples1973.com site up as a Class of '73 site so we don't lose contact.
Thanks

All of us on the reunion committee were asked if we could please send out a classmates e-mail listing. E-mail addresses are considered private information. As such, I need you to send me your address if you would like to make your e-mail address known to our fellow classmates. Please send it to me with your full name to, eric.bosch@boschllc.com I will send out the listing soon to all those who gave their OK.
We were not able to find some of our classmates, so if you should know of someone who you think would want to be included, drop them a line and tell them they need to send it to me.
If you've already let me know it’s OK to include you, please don't be redundant.

Okay, Mark beat me to it--I want to add my kudos to everyone for coming "home" and pulling off a fabulous reunion--what a wonderful weekend and many thanks to the incredible planning team--Daryl,Sue, Scott, Eric, Chip, Andrea, and all--for putting on such great parties! We've got to stay in touch and get another reunion planned for the 40th--15 years is just too long to wait! It was so much fun trying to figure out who we all "are" and to find out we are all WONDERFUL!! Westport is an extraordinary place to have grown up and we're all part of what made it great--I'm so glad we all came. I've updated my information, so in case anyone is coming through Virginia, you can stop by and say "howdy!" I'd love to see you,
Lucy

What a terrific weekend this was! It’s a struggle to capture into this posting all the thoughts that come to mind at this moment. For me, this was an unforgettable milestone – a chance to reconnect with classmates, Staples and Westport after a long, long time away. I found flying back to Houston on Sunday afternoon quite thought provoking – to be part of Staples ’73 – wow!
First, congratulations to all the organizing committee – an outstanding job – well done! Thanks to everyone for making the effort to attend. Like many I’m sure, I was a little apprehensive for what the weekend might bring – out of a class of 600+ how can one know everyone...but once we all gathered together there was no stopping the partying and sharing those memories!
May I suggest we start a thread now for a 40th reunion, so that people can put the date and place in their diaries. Any suggestions for a venue for 2013?
Thanks again to everyone and all the best to Staples ’73 – Cheers Mark Winslet

Thanks for coming to the reunion, classmates of ‘73! Those who couldn’t make it, we sincerely missed you. We’re looking forward to seeing you at the next one.
I’d like to acknowledge all of you for making it so much fun, and to our very special group who worked so hard to make it happen. I think we were all a bit courageous and/or curious enough to want to come back and acknowledge our past, our commonality, and most importantly our friendships. I think we all knew it would be non-stop fun and laughs once we got everyone back together again.
“What a time that was growing up in Westport in the 60’s & early 70’s”, was the way I heard a lot of conversations start out, and “what a great time we all had together again”, seemed to be in everyone’s good-byes.
High school was a blast at times for sure, sometimes difficult, but what I hear this weekend was that we grew up in a wonderful town and in an amazing and tumultuous time in history.
I wrote a poem when I was leaving home at 18, that I found in amongst all my old high school pictures. The ending said: “No matter what roads life takes me down, or how many I’ll travel, all roads lead homeward. And where is home, but that special place within your heart.”
Here are two more from the “Wonder Years” that I thought I’d add.
“The friends who grew up with you deserve a special respect. The ones who stuck by you shoulder to shoulder, in a time where nothing was certain, all life lay ahead, and every road led home.”
“Growing up is full of big moments. Some of them you can see coming from a mile away; and some you can't see at all.”
Let’s stay in touch & I hope we can all see each other again a few years down the road.
Thanks again for coming class of ’73!

Such nice sentiments, Dan. I was on my way to bed after the shindig but ended up changing into jeans and a T-shirt and ran downstairs to the bar barefoot to sit with you guys and pour over the yearbooks because there was no way I was going to be able to fall asleep after the great party. I think the bodies got older, but the personalities don't...it was so nice to hear so many people say to me..."that's exactly how I remember you with a big smile on your face and those dimples"...when you look in someone's eyes and hear their voice and see their mannerisms AND see how silly we all can be...you think they haven't changed a bit...but as we looked at the pictures, we realized we all had. So touching to speak of and remember those we have lost too early. You are forever in our hearts...and ALL of us will always be connected through the elementary and Junior high schools we attended together and Staples and our beautiful Westport. Boy did the drive into the beach tug at me....I thought, "THIS is where I belong"

I can't believe I can walk nto a room and recognize many of the same faces from 35 years ago..!!(without looking at the nametags).. then there are the jokers wearing other peoples nametags.. (Rosa and Pinyon)to see who is really paying attention! Okay some physical changes.that age brings on.....but so young at Heart!!!..some looked like they hadn't aged at all...those of us have aged...certainly have done that gracefuly...
A small group of us spent several hours after the main room shut down at the bar of the Norwalk Inn last night going through our entire yearbook, and I can attest to the fact that we ARE
STILL SUCH A HIGH-SPIRITED GROUP!
GREAT REUNION...Thanks so much to the organizers!!! and all the hard work that went into the planning... would have loved to hit Viva's and the beach on Sunday...but my wife Susan Shaner (class of 79) was ailing on Sunday and needed my TLC.. also wish my brother DOUG could have made it in...WE MISSED YOU..BRO!!..lots of folks were asking about you!
Great catching up with so many great folks..a list too long to write dome here on thr Blog..
WE REALLY WERE AN AMAZING CLASS....and it's great to know that several folks are right here in my neighborhood in Northern Fairfield county..Redding, Newton., I'm now inspired thanks to our reunion to stay in touch...not only with the Fairfield County folks..CLASS OF 1973 TOTALLY ROCKS....!!!

Friday night at Viva Zapata and Sunday at the beach is casual. I think most people think "cocktail party attire" when dressing for the reunion itself...But I am sure there will be men in suits or sport coats and some wearing polo shirts..Wear whatever you are comfortable in! See you then! Susan

I’ve been lurking in the background, enjoying watching the names go by. I live in the Netherlands, so unfortunately I can’t possibly make it to the reunion. Is there any hope someone can set up a Skype connection or something like that? I would love to be able to see and talk to people, even if I have to stay up until the middle of the night Dutch time (or get up very early in the morning): we’re 6 hours later here.
I was past forty when I married Mira Pospisil, whom I almost met when we were students at Yale, so now that we’re past fifty we’re raising two (usually) wonderful girls: Libuska and Leonora, soon turning 13 and 8. I hope I can show them Westport some day, but when we visit the U.S. the time disappears so quickly.
Seems like lots of people have been reminiscing more about Junior High than High School. Someone mentioned Coleytown’s science teacher ‘Mr. Mac’ (Darell MacFarland). Does anyone know where I could contact him or the math teacher John Pepe? Mr. Mac was infamous for being strict, but I enjoyed his classes. Of course I was also hopelessly unfashionable and completely outside the popular circles in school. I learned only years later that when I was in 9th grade (and still had a crew cut, black plastic frame glasses and out-of-style clothes) Jane Herold tried to convince people to vote for me for ‘nonconformist’ (‘they just didn’t understand’, she said). I recently found her fine pottery website.
Several months ago, Matt Light wondered who played Adelaide in Guys and Dolls. I wasn’t involved in the production at all, but unless my memory is playing tricks on me it was Mitzi MacLachlan (a quick check on Google turns her up as Mary Ann MacLachlan Mallonee). Perhaps she was hard to remember because she was so good in her anti-typecast role: she just became Adelaide and Mitzi dissappeared!

I posted this already over in the News section, but in case you missed it, former Staples drama teacher, Al Pia has passed away at 85:
From Westportnow.com, 9/4/08:
Westport Drama King Al Pia Dies at 85
Albert Pia, who led Westport’s Staples Players from 1968 to 1996 and had a long career in theater arts, died Wednesday night. He was 85.
Pia, who lived in Norwalk, had been in ill health for some time.
Last month, he was honored by Staples alumni in Westport and the school’s Black Box Theatre was named in his honor. First Selectman Gordon F. Joseloff declared Aug. 9, 2008 “Al Pia Day” in Westport and presented him with a commemorative plaque.
In addition to the Players, Pia also founded the summer theater program at the school, one that he continued to direct well past his retirement, and the studio theater program.
In his long career, Pia considered himself first and foremost a teacher.
In Westport, he concentrated on changing the theater curriculum to offer experience at a sophisticated level, insisting, for example, that students read college-level plays and study the Stanislavski acting method.
A former student recalled that in order to pass a semester of drama, Pia insisted that his students see or read 24 plays and write a full-length report on each one.
“I admit to once being skeptical of Pia’s claims about the plays we were reading; that is, until I went to college,” the former student said. “When the professor handed out the syllabus for my first theater course at Yale, I discovered Pia had told us the truth--I had already read half of the semester’s list.”
Pia’s involvement in theater began as a youth in school, staging plays as actor, director and stage technician, and through high school and college years. He graduated from Stamford High School in 1941. At 17, he left his native Stamford to fly in combat planes over Europe during World War II.WestportNow.com Image
Westport’s Staples High School theater community last month honored Pia before a performance of “Les Miserables--Student Edition.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Lynn U. Miller for WestportNow.com
In 1949, he earned a B.A degree from the University of New Hampshire and followed with a Masters in education there in 1953. Doctoral study at Harvard University was interrupted by recall to active military duty during the Korean War.
Later, he worked in India and Turkey managing international trade fairs for the U.S. Commerce Department and in Munich, Germany with Radio Liberty, an international broadcasting firm for the U.S. Department of State.

Hey class,
I feel like a collection agency, but for all those who have committed and are attending please send your checks to Susie or use your credit cards and earn those frequent flyer miles, as the Norwalk Inn needs to get a head count very soon. Thanks.
