Wendy:
We are so sorry to hear about your brother. This is the part about getting older that is very hard and painful.
You will find it easier in the days ahead by remembering all the good times - you can always share the memories with friends. All of our memories we share with each other only enrich our lives - we can relate and it usually envokes a memory of our own.
Please remember you are only alone if you choose to be - reach out to friends - we are all a family.
Take care, we are thinking of you.

Wendy,
We didn't know eachother well at all, but my heart goes out to you. Grief is a terrifying emotion. It's so good that you are reaching out. You will get through it and if you need to vent - I'm listening.

At approximately 6:50 pm EST my brother, Rocky, passed away. I cannot believe the gut wrenching, primal screams coming out of me. My friends are my family now. I need you all so much now! I cannot believe this has happened. There is a Celebration of Roc's Life 8/21/2010. More detail later.
It's even harder when you have only one sibling. Roc & I have not been really close most of our adult lives. He was just starting to reach out to me more and actually say the words 'love you' to me - something he has had trouble saying for most of his life. I was just starting to have the brother I had always wanted and now he is taken from me. When my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's he softened. He became the father I had always wanted and we started to finally become closer. Then he was taken from me and died just 7 months ago.
My uncle, who l love dearly, will be 93 in 3 weeks and I fear losing him, too. That will be the end of any family I have history with back to my birth. No one left to share the memories. No one left to ask questions of. No one left.
xo ^..^

Unfortunately, I also have bad news to report. Peggy Cowden Merry has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. She currently is an Art teacher at Fairfield Warde High School. She lives in Monroe and will most likely not go back to teaching. Pray for her and her family. This has been devastating to the family.

I worked in the Nines Club. Started in the coat check room, then started carrying equipment and helping set up the bands. It was open for less than a year. Great bands. Richie Rich and the Rich Kids, The Blues Magoos, Leslie West and The Vagrants. There were three stages, with continual live music. Just wasn't viable financially I guess.

Here's another memory...does anyone remember when Lester Lanin opened his club for teens called the Nines Club? I still have one of the caps they handed out that says Nines Club on the front. They had some great bands, but I don't remember it lasting very long.

Just throwing out a couple of names to see if anyone remembers them: Craig Jones is one. I remember he lived in an apt. on Taylor Place behind Ships and had a pet monkey in this large cage. The other is Sandy Swenson who was a good friend at Staples and her parents were friends with my mother. Her family moved out of Westport to Mass. and just lost touch. Just curious as these were people who I knew once upon a time who left an impression [some good, some bad] on my life.

It is my understanding that the Westport Historical Society has in their basement a collection of most, if not all of the Staples yearbooks. I know there are some anyway from having looked up those of my four brothers and sisters some years ago.

We're willing to do the work of scanning all the images in a Staples 1969 yearbook, if someone who has a yearbook is willing to send it to us and let us have it for a week or two during the scanning. Please just drop us a note if you're willing to lend us your yearbook for a little while so that everyone can enjoy the images. Thanks.

'69ers - Please help me solve a mystery, if you can.
My oldest brother, Ed (Class of '62), had a friend back then and after high school who died of a heart attack at 28 years old. My brother swears that he graduated, but is not listed on his class or any other. His name was Bill Harper. He was an older brother of Brian, who was in our class when at Bedford JH.
Does anyone remember him? Also, any ideas about Brian's whereabouts or where he went to rather than Staples?
Thanks! It's just puzzled my brother as to why he has been ommitted from the class list.

Billy Paladino was and I am sure still is the sweetest guy in Connecticut. Incredibly sad news, but I choose to believe (and pray) only the best for him. He deserves it. And that the checks we send can help, too. Thanks Shelby. Keep us posted, please. And make sure he gets all these messages from his friends.

Even though I did not know Bill Palladino I was very moved by hearing about his difficulties. I called the bank to see how to send a check, and this is how to do it. Make it out to Bill Palladino Trust Fund, and send it to:
Newtown Savings Bank

This notice is for one of our own Billy Palladino, Staples H.S. graduate, class of 1968. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in November of 2009 and has been hospitalized since Feb. 6, when complications from throat cancer surgery in November robbed him of his ability to speak. He had an operation where they removed his epiglottis, the flap that covers the trachea during swallowing so that food does not enter the lungs. He had a Tracheotomy and now is unable to speak. He is presently in Danbury Hospital and is receiving Chemotherapy and Radiation and hoping to go home soon.
With all this going on for Bill, another tragedy struck his family. His wife, Janice Ann McClenathan Palladino, age 45, passed away from a massive heart attack on February 11, 2010 at her home in Sandy Hook, CT. She was also a Staples High School Graduate, class of 1983. Not only did his wife meticulously prepare meals that were injected through the feeding tube Bill had implanted after his surgery and monitor his medications, her full-time job at a small manufacturing company in Oxford provided the health insurance that covered the bulk of his medical bills.
Now there is no income for family and they don't know how long the insurance from Janice's job will cover Billy's medical bills. They have 2 daughters, Michelle and Sarah Palladino who are both in college.
We want to let you know that a trust fund has been set up for Billy and his family at:
Newtown Savings Bank
30 Main Street
Danbury CT 06810
Phone: (203) 205-0080
For those of you that want to contact him or send get well cards to, his home contact information is:
Bill Palladino
7 Overlook Knoll
Sandy Hook CT 06482
(203) 426-8960
Here are some links for more information:
Article on Billy in the Danbury News Times, Feb. 21, 2010: -link-
Obituary from the Westport News on Janice Ann McClenathan Palladino: -link-
Please help out where you can. Collectively we can all make a difference for Billy and his family, no matter what the $ amount is. Words of support are also needed if you can't make a donation during these hard times.
Thank you, Shelby Goodlett Pike

Hello Class of 69:
Thanks to all of you our 40th reunion was a huge success! It's always the people that make an event special! It was so good to see everyone and walk down memory lane again!
Due to your generosity, our class  raised $1,969.00  (how appropriate!) for  the Staples Tuition Grant Fund.
This  award will be presented to a deserving graduating senior to help defray  their college costs. We've posted a shot of some of Team 40 giving a check to the STG Chairperson on this site. You can view this picture on westporters.com 1969 Class image gallery, it's called: STG_shot.jpg
Additionally, you  raised $500  for the Westport Historical Society through  your purchases of Dan Woog's book on the History of Staples High School.
What an amazing accomplishment  for our class to give back after 40 years to our great Alma mater and Town.
Our years at Staples have and will continue to shape our lives forever! We thank  all of you for coming to the reunion and for your generous donations!
To view  pictures of the reunion; visit Shelby's site at: -link-
Bags:  If you paid your $99 and did not receive your  incredible gift bag  containing the CD and directory, pls. contact: Kathy Sabo @: katharinesabo at yahoo com.
If you were not able to attend, but wish to purchase this amazing gift, please send a check made payable to “Staples Class of 1969” for $20 to Kathy Sabo, 16 Mountain Road, Wilton, CT 06897.
Please keep in touch and we'll keep you posted on our next gathering. If you have any shots of the reunion you would like to share, please send them to Shelby Goodlett Pike at this email address: carsalon at optonline net, or for those of you without computers, 182 Kellogg Drive, Wilton, CT 06897. We've discussed doing an informal gathering at Compo Beach next year on Memorial Day, but that's still in the planning stage. So keep checking back for that announcement. Until then, be well and with great affection…
Team 40 Reunion Committee: Peter Krieg, Shelby Goodlett Pike, Kathy Kopp Sabo, Debbie Hooper Fisher, Alex Shook, Jeff Allen, Lorrie Besser Ward, Debbie Sims, Leslie O'Toole, Mark Bunger, Karin Swan Brooks, Ray Flanigan, & Joel Wald.

Hey 69er's
Here are some shots from all three days of our 40th reunion. -link-
There are 2 pages with a link to the second page at the bottom of the first page.
Thanks to all your accolades to Team 40, but as the saying goes: it's the people that make the party, and our class still knows how to do that! Great to see some of you at the 40th and I hope when we do decide another one is due, more of you will show up for it! We are having a meeting on Thursday night and I'm sure the subject of a 45 year reunion will be discussed. Go 69ers!

For the third time, I am posting way overdue accolades to the team that brought us together last weekend. Thanks so much to Pete Krieg, Shelby, Alex, Joel and all who so graciously and generously gave of their energy and time to make this a fantastic weekend. The attention to the personal details (like correct spellings on the name tags!), the directory and especially heartfelt wall of memories to dear friends was extraordinary. Great time at the beach (thanks Marc for an unexpected treat). It was a once in a lifetime experience. I can't believe I missed Chris Toelken! He played at my wedding 22 years ago. Sorry, Chris. I'll thank you in person next time around.

The reunion was an amazing experience. There's always been a place in my heart for many of the people I saw this weekend - and it was really, really good to see them and, well, EVERYONE! You all looked and sounded GREAT!
It was also very sobering to remember those that are no longer with us and to hear their stories from friends. It was a very special weekend for me. I hadn't been to any of the other reunions, but I will do my best to attend those in the future.
Many, many thanx to all on the team for all their hard work and the many hours it took to put this together and pull it off seamlessly (at least it appeared so to us!).
And THE BAND! KILLIN'!

Hello Everyone. It was great to see all of my fellow classmates of 1969. I really enjoyed myself at the Black Duck Friday night, and fully intended to attend the rest of the functions over the weekend. As would have it I woke up Saturday morning feeling very ill, and had to go to the Norwalk Hospital Sunday to visit the doctors instead of being at the beach. I was so looking foward to all of the wonderful events that the reunion committee had organized, they did just a great job. I was glad to see that we are planning more events in the future, and I look foward to coming back. I hope my meal did not go to waste at the Cobbs Mill Inn! I am doing great and heading back home to Denver.

Hi Everyone!
Just a note of thanks to the class of 69 reunion committee! I know that everyone realizes "all" the hard work that goes into putting on such a wonderful three days celebration. Personally, I can't tell you how much fun I had talking with all of my friends and former classmates. I talked so much I had a sore throat for two days and I'm sorry to say I didn't get a chance to talk everyone. To all those that could not attend, you missed three great parties.
Looking forward to our next picnic at Compo.
Until next time, safe travels!
T.K.
